Las Vegas And Back- We’ve Moved In The New Studio!

Uncategorized 3 . 10 . 14

Whew, it’s been a busy couple of busy weeks! I feel like I haven’t been as active here as usual so I wanted to give everyone an update. We have been working non-stop on the studio; painting, cleaning, more painting, and doing some cosmetic work on the interior. Let me re-phrase that, Nick has been doing some cosmetic work. His honey do list is crazy long! We officially moved everything in this weekend. Today, we finally have some warm weather so we are heading out to paint all the new antique furniture I have been buying for the studio. Friday will be my first boudoir/glamour session in the new space. I am so excited! Several have been asking about our new location, the address is 423 E High. We are about 5 blocks from the Capital. The exterior is getting a full makeover this spring/summer including a new deck, paint, and lots of landscaping.

Last week, we took the week off to attend WPPI in Las Vegas. This was my third conference and Nick’s first. It was an amazing time had by all! If you haven’t attended this conference and you are a photographer/cinematographer you need too! There are several classes you can attend to sharpen your skills on shooting and running your business. The conference is held every year late February early March. Get ready to book your tickets for 2015 at the end of this year!

The highlights from attending WPPI always meeting and networking with peers. I met so many new amazing people I hope to stay in touch with through social media. Nick and I attended the opening evening event held at the Hakksasan night club (which holds more than 4,000 people!) in the MGM Grand Hotel where the conference is held. It was fun dancing the night away. We also woke up early one morning to join a group of photographers who ran to the nostalgic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. It was a little over 4 miles, but it was the easiest run of my life. No hills in the dessert! The vendor expo is always amazing and huge. It took about two days to get through everything. Another highlight from the trip was indulging on some Asian Nachos! If you are ever in Vegas go to the Venetian Hotel , visit the Grand Luxe Café, and order the Asian Nachos. You can thank me later ;)

While I was there I was able to sit down with Chris Becker on his new venture, PhotogRefers.com. The article will be released end of this week on Fstoppers.com. Don’t forget to check it out photographers and sign up for a free account. This month is starting to heat up, spring is in the air. Our editorial 2015 senior model shoot is this weekend! Stay tuned, we will be releasing our senior magazine in the next couple of weeks and begin accepting appointments.

Planting Roots-We purchased a studio!

Uncategorized 2 . 19 . 14

There are so many exciting things happening right now. I can’t wait to share everything with you. This feels like the biggest news I have put on the blog to date. We purchased a studio today! That’s right JCMO, I have put down some roots and I am here to stay. Nick and I privately began this search at the beginning of last year. I started renting a studio downtown. The idea of paying someone else’s mortgage makes me queasy. I am not a good tenant; it is a waste of money in my opinion. However, I am an excellent property owner.

The step of renting a commercial space for a year was needed to make sure this is what we wanted to do. Growing up in the largest real estate brokerage in South Central Missouri and having a very popular and successful father has taught me a lot about investing. I am so blessed to have amazing parents to teach us about personal finances, building wealth, and running a small business. Nick and I are very thankful for everything they have taught us, we wouldn’t be able to afford this opportunity without the knowledge they have shared.

We began the search for this property just like our other investments. We wanted something that would work for my business, yet be a lifetime investment for us personally. I know photographers normally struggle with the decision to run the business out of their home or have a commercial space. Last year was my first full year in Jefferson City, and my business saw exponential growth for operating out of a commercial space. Having this space has allowed me to offer my clients so much more than previously working out of my home. I knew eventually purchasing a studio would be the way to go. I didn’t think this opportunity would come so soon! It has been hard work and we have had to make several sacrifices along the way. Today, it all feels worth it.

The first consideration for this property was that it had to be in Downtown Jefferson City. I know there are other areas that are more popular, but I am an old soul and love the character of historic homes and buildings. I am not a fan of new construction.  On the other hand, Nick’s motto is “old house old problems”. We compromised on this one ;) The other consideration was that it had to have plenty of natural light, space for a viewing room, and shooting space.  Since it is a historic home it has ceiling to floor windows. They make me drool; I wish they were in our home. It has gorgeous hardwood floors and the old refinished solid wood baseboards and doors. This commercial building used to be a home so it has several room options for shooting. I am super excited to be able to open a full studio for glamour/boudoir portraits!

Since the building is an old home, we have several projects we will be working on. The exterior will be getting a little makeover this spring. We are concentrating on getting the interior completed first. I will be posting pictures of our progress along the way! I am nervous and excited about this new adventure! We are about 5 blocks from the Capital. Special thanks to each of you who have enabled me to live out my dream every day. XOXO

A Styled Valentine’s Day

Editorial Shoots 2 . 13 . 14

A couple weeks ago, I teamed up with Natalie Imhoff with The Bridal Solution for a styled Valentine’s Day shoot. We were both inspired to put this photo-shoot together with the growing trends of deep red and gold colors for 2014 weddings. This shoot was simply inspired by cherries. Our shoot was photographed at the High Street Business Center in Jefferson City, Missouri. The Business Center is an old charming home that was recently restored to it natural beauty to host weddings, meetings, and other events. Chef Riley Epperson is a cheese specialist with Hyvee and designed a fabulous “cheese cake” to help inspire this photo-shoot.  The florals were provided by River City Florist. Natalie chose red roses and eucalyptus to accent the dark red, gold, and rich warm tones. She wanted to pull in a few traditional Valentine’s Day elements and then offer some unique elements. Hair and make-up was completed by Catherine Crum the Salon, Taylor Martinez. The gorgeous Carolina Herrera dress was rented from Rent the Runway. Our lovely model was Kayla Broeker. It was so great to connect and photograph one of my past seniors! Thanks to everyone who helped make this a success!
